What Everyone Ought To Know Before Creating Their First Youtube Video

Behind-the-scenes: What everyone ought to know before creating their first Youtube video

I often get questions and comments about my AnnaTV show on Youtube. Such as, “how did you get the confidence to start it?”, “I could never do that” or even “what type of camera do you use?”. This behind-the-scenes post aims to answer those questions and give you the confidence to create your first Yourtube video.

You can download the printable Youtube video checklist for killer videos at the bottom of this post.

Here are a few things you need to know before making your first video:

  1. We all have the fears of failing or embarrassing ourselves

It was just over a year ago in April 2015 that I started up my own online TV show, AnnaTV. I knew that it would take my business to the next level but I wasn’t sure I had the confidence to put myself out there.

Internally, I was battling fear and limiting beliefs. The thoughts that were playing on repeat inside my head included:

  • I don’t know what I’m doing

  • Nobody is going to watch this

  • You won’t know what to say

  • You are just going to embarrass yourself

My inner critic was very loud.

Despite my fears, video is an amazing medium to connect with people. It is a way for people get to know the real you because they can see you. It becomes clear that you’re a real person and people relate to that.

I knew that I had to push past the fear and show myself that I could do things that scared the crap out of me. I used fear as my compass.

Fear can be a guiding force to tell you what you need to do in order to grow into the best version of yourself.

I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and my boundaries stretched out further.

  1. Focus on progress over perfection

It turned out that I didn’t need all of the fancy equipment that I told myself I had to have before I started. This was just me self-sabotaging my progress. I envisioned everyone else having a production crew and me with nothing. The desire to have the proper equipment paralysed me for some time.

I decided to just start where I was.

I focused on progress over perfection. I had an SLR camera but no lighting, audio devices or crew members. But I did it anyway, the best I could with the resources I had.

  1. Don’t give up

I thought about quitting after I had released my first few Youtube videos that had minimal views and I still had only a few subscribers.

I was putting so much time and effort into each video with no results. But Rome wasn’t built in a day so I pushed through this tough period. I now have over 3000 views across my videos.

This was the result of my growth mindset – the belief that anything I didn’t know, I could learn. I believed that any failures or setbacks were just opportunities for growth and I was able to learn from them.

If I didn’t get many views on a video, it just meant that I missed the mark with my tribe so I tried and tried again. I never let it knock me down, I would just come back fighting stronger.

  1. You don’t have to know exactly what your topic is

Creation causes clarity so whilst I was creating each Youtube video I was also working out what it was that I wanted to contribute to the world.

Creation causes clarity so focus on progress over perfection. Start where you are.

My videos started out with meditation, then I moved to exam tips for students and now I have realised that my mission is to help people overcome their limiting beliefs so that they can achieve everything they desire.

So that’s what you ought to know before making your first Youtube video.

Now, I’d love to hear from you! Have you ever made a YouTube video? Share it in the comments. If not, what beliefs are stopping you?

The last thing I want to tell you is that you’ll improve over time. Here is my first YouTube video from April 2015 (it makes me cringe but I’m so proud I did it – you will be too!):
