How Online Business Works
My online business gives me the freedom to work from anywhere and study my PhD in Business. More than that, it gives me the luxury to support the causes I care about, fund my healthy lifestyle and travel whenever I like. Interested in how online business works? Read on, my friend.
I’m 25 years old and grew up in a country town in Australia. I now live in a beachside apartment near Sydney with my partner, Doug, building a successful business around my passions.
I empower millennials to ditch the 9 to 5 and start an online business. The aim is to inspire them to live the life of their dreams. This work is a passion of mine but I have so many others such as travel, photography, wellness and personal development.
Plus, I’m studying my Doctorate in Business which means I can’t spend my days working in a conventional 9 to 5 job. I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship to study. However, to fund my lifestyle and love of travel, the scholarship doesn’t quite cover it. That’s why I hustle so hard in my online business (other than the fact that I love to serve).
Making money from an online business gives me time and location flexibility so I can choose when to work and play. You’ll usually find me at the beach or in a yoga class when most people are trying to keep their eyes open at their office job.
A lot of people wonder how this is possible – like, what it is that I do?
So I want to share a bit about how online business works with you today.
I didn’t always want an online business
Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. However, I ended up enrolling in psychology at the last minute when I was deciding on my course for university. I proceeded to change my course of study 3 times and finished with 2 degrees, Commerce and International Studies.
But I got such a reality check of what my next 50 working years might be like when I started my first role in the corporate world.
It went a bit like this – I’d have to wake up at 6AM to commute for nearly two hours into the city. I’d sit at an enclosed cubicle all day with no natural light working on documents that didn’t matter to me. I’d get home in the dark, eat, go to bed and then start all over again at 6AM! After 9 weeks of that, my body had had it and I got so sick that I didn’t make it into work the next week.
That’s when I knew that I had to find another way. I knew that this was not how I wanted my life to be.
I’d heard a bit about people making money blogging so thought I’d give it a red hot go.
But first, I needed to figure out what I was passionate about to build a business around.
My first online business
I started my first business, Study Well, teaching university students about one of my passions, wellness.
When my first online sale came in for my website, for promoting someone else’s product, when I wasn’t even at my laptop – I was hooked. I devoured any courses, programs, coaching, books, audios, or anything(!) online business. I joined some in-person meetups where I saw firsthand that normal people were making massive incomes doing what they loved. It inspired me so much to see that they were deciding how they could best make a difference in the world.
Now, I’m so glad I rejected the norms and society’s expectations of going into the corporate world after I finished my degrees. Otherwise, I never would have grown into the person I am today or have the ability to make a positive impact on people’s lives like I can now.
Biggest fears holding me back
It wasn’t easy, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster really. Sometimes there have been tears. I’ve taken gambles on things that didn’t work. I’ve been scared of failing, of disappointing my family, of being judged for doing something different. Sometimes I’d be unsure of my ideas and not know which direction to go in.
But what scared me even more than all of those things was continuing that life waking up at 6 and getting home at night for something I cared nothing about. I didn’t want to be stuck in the 9 to 5, treated as a disposable employee and not making the impact that I felt I could make. I didn’t want to continue wasting my life at an office desk. What scared me most was thinking of myself going through the motions each day and not living up to my full potential.
How online business works for me
Now that I’ve been in online business for a few years, people often ask me how online business works.
Well, in the beginning, I knew that if you can help someone solve a pain or problem, they are willing to pay for it. So I thought about the ideal person that I want to serve and what their pain point would be. The person I most want to serve is me back when I’d recently graduated and started my first job. I would have given anything for someone to provide me with an ‘out’.
Now, I live my life around my passions rather than slaving away at work that doesn’t matter to me. It’s pretty great.
My friends still working in corporate tell me that it’s too late for them to start online or that all the ideas are taken. I once felt like that too but that truth is that your unique voice and experiences will resonate strongly with a specific group and no one can speak to them better than you. No one else has done what you’ve done or knows what you know.
Make online business work for you
Also, through my PhD, I continue to learn about the troubles with the corporate world today and how it affects workers wellbeing. It’s obvious to me that we need to rethink the notion that time equals money and realise that it is providing value that equals money. With one $10 ebook, you can sell it to thousands of people – and continue helping people and be making money for years to come.
We are living at a time when the Internet is providing a wealth of opportunity. It’s time to start using that fact to start creating the life you’ve always imagined. Especially, now that you have an idea of how online business works.
I believe everything happens for a reason and you were divinely guided to hear my story today. Now it’s time to rewrite your own.
